HRD Minister fails to understand the protests of IIT faculty like trade unionists

Human Resource Development Minister Sibal fails to find the rationale for protests by IIT faculty similar to trade unions. He had big surprise over faculty's demand to do away with the provision of First Class at preceding degree along with Ph.D for the posts of AP, Assoc. Prof. or Professor. He couldn't understand how this condition interfere with autonomy.

He said that IIT's were free to send proposals to their board for relaxation in 10% recruitments for fresh Ph.D from IITs.

Mr Sibal was of the view that promotion avenues were much better for IIT faculty compared to faculty in universities. An Assist. Prof. in IIT may become the Assoc. Professor within six year while it can take 12 years in UGC system to become Assoc. Professor.

The cap of 40% on the post of Senior Professors was much higher than a cap of 10% in UGC, 20% in NIT and 25% in AIIMS.

He described their salaries as the 'icing on the cake' considering the less actual time alloted to teaching to facilitate research and consultancy work.
