Single regulatory body for higher education?

National Knowledge Commission (NKC), the advisory body to the Prime Minister has called for the abolition of the regulatory regime in the education sector to give Universities and Institutions more autonomy in decision making. This move will abolish the two giant regulators namely UGC and AICTE. Majority opinion is to create an independent National Council for Higher Education (NHCE) to take over the functions of two bodies (UGC & AICTE). as per the suggestions of a panel headed by physicist and educationist Yash Pal, up to study NKC recommendations on the two regulators. The committee also recommends a self-regulatory regime for universities, including the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. Government is believed to be in favor of total implementation of the Yash Pal report, which also suggests scrapping of the deemed university status for state and private institutions.
